Patient understands why teeth are being straightened and the treatment plan,
brushes after Eating anything and flosses once a day, avoids HARD and STICKY
foods and minimizes sugar intake, always wears headgear, elastics and other
appliances, keeps all appointments, arrives on time and reports lost or broken
appliances and does not play or fiddle with the appliances.
Parents and Friends are supportive, understanding, gently coaching and always
caring.
EATING
HABITS
DO NOT EAT SUBSTANCES LIKE :
Hard candy, Caramel, Nuts, Ice, Bones (or pencils), Popcorn, Whole Apples,
Hard Bread Crusts, Chips, Dried Meat,
Raw Vegetables like Carrots and
Celery, Chikki, Chakli, Laadus or
Tough Roti, Supari, Pan Masala, etc.
These can break the delicate
appliances.
DO NOT EAT :
Sugar and sugary products as these can damage teeth or gums.
EAT A LOT OF :
Balanced diet consisting of Meat, Vegetables, Fruits, Cereals and Dairy
products.
BRUSHING

Permanent stains, cavities and gum disease are all caused by bacteria
that live on teeth in a colorless sticky substance called "Plaque".
Plaque must be removed every day. Braces make it harder to remove
plaque. Brackets, Bands and arch wires create nooks and crevices that
are hard to reach, therefore the brushing technique is different. The
brush should be placed against the teeth at an angle. The bristles
should be pushed under the wire and between the teeth. The brush should
then be vibrated and moved in small circles in each area of the mouth.
This should be done from above and below the arch wire. Scrub all over
the braces, teeth and gums in circular motion and do not forget the
tongue side and chewing surfaces. When brushing is finished, the braces
and the teeth should be free of food particles and plaque. The braces
should be shiny, the gum margin should be distinct and gum tissue should
be firm and a light pink color. A careful brushing should take 3 minutes
and should be done within 10 minutes after eating. Always brush before
bedtime.
